The Foundation Stage begins in the Nursery with a structured Pre-school programme for children aged 31/2 - 41/2 years. This program gives children a happy introduction to school life, covering all areas of their developmental learning.
The Nursery timetable consists of a suitable balance of child-initiated learning alongside adult-focused activities. We introduce the children to a selection of activities designed to stimulate development and learning through play in a caring environment. Classroom provision and the carefully designed learning centers provide opportunities for skills development in language, mathematics, STEM, and creativity. These lead to experiences in problem-solving, inquiry, investigation, discovery and active hands-on explorations.
Children are introduced to more structured, adult-led sessions, particularly in mathematics and literacy. Phonics teaching begins in the Spring term of the Pre-nursery year for those children who are developmentally ready, and is continued from the beginning of Nursery. We follow the ‘Jolly Phonics’ scheme. Mathematics is taught through a variety of practical activities.
Our Nursery program helps children acquire leadership skills as well as helps prepare them for a smooth transition into a higher-education setting.
